Author's Note
The theme I chose for my poem anthology is the power of love. All the poems I have chosen show the effect love has on a person. We become obsessed with the idea of love and think it’s perfect that we tend to forget that people suffer from heartbreak and loss of a loved one. Love is controlling and we do not know how it has that power. The order of my poems are from the oldest to the most recent ones. I wanted to show readers than love is still an important theme and that our thoughts about it have not changed. I choose the famous sonnet found in the play "Romeo and Juliet" to show the strong bond and compassion between two young people can have. Following that I chose "Annabel Lee" to show the harsh reality that one day we will all die and become separated from our loved ones. The speaker believes that their love will never die as he lies by his dead girlfriend. Love can make someone crazy. The next poem "somewhere i have never travelled, glady beyond" is a nice contrast to "Annabel Lee" as it discusses the power of love and how controlling it can be. "When You Are Old" reminds us that love will not always be returned. We tend to forget the realities of love which is why I included the slam poem "When Love Arrives". The last poem "How to Love" discusses how to believe in love after betrayal. With these poems that I have chosen and two of my own I hope that they embody shows how love is a powerful thing.
